Common Toilet Repairs in Canton, Michigan

Picture
Is your toilet troubling you? Do you have to deal with a toilet that leaks, a bowl that won't fill correctly, or any number of other toilet related water works? Your toilet consists of a basic number of components, so with a bit of troubleshooting and the help of this guide you should be able to work through any issues that you may be experiencing.

Leaking water on the bathroom floor:
Check for any visible cracks, it may be that the base section of your toilet has been damaged and needs replacing. The wax ring should also be inspected for faults; this is the seal that is found at the base of your toilet. If you can see water issuing from the base of the toilet after flushing this is probably the cause. Another possibility is loose bolts or connections. Ensure you methodically tighten the water supply tube nut, the tank bolts, the bull cock coupling nut. New washers may be needed.

Your toilet is blocked or the bowl drains slowly:
This means you have an obstacle in the u-bend or beyond and requires the use of a plunger or a toilet auger. Try the plunger first and then move on to an auger for more serious blockages. For those who cannot find a plunger, you can use a metal coat hanger. Deconstruct the coat hanger by flattening it out and it is possible to use the hooked end to deal with the offending blockage.

Loose flush handle:
The lift chain or line may have become disconnected, look inside the cistern and check to see that the connection is correctly in place. If this fails, try tightening the lock nut that attaches the handle to the cistern.

Fantom flush:
Water will be escaping from the tank into the bowl with no one at the controls. This is usually down to a damaged stopper valve that needs replacing. It also helps to clean the cistern as lime scale build up may be stopping the valve from closing properly.

The weak flush:
The toilet is not flushing with vigor and it takes a couple of attempts to successfully dispose of the contents of the bowl. Lift the lid and look inside the cistern. If the flush stopper is not opening fully this is a problem. Make sure the chain lifting the flush stopper is not too loose and lose some slack if needed.
Check the water line; you need a decent volume of water to flush the bowl. If there is a drop in the water level try bending the float ball arm up to increase the volume of water in the cistern?

The tank is constantly filling:
You can hear a constant hiss emanating from the tank. This is most likely down to the water feed supply line. This will be as a result of a faulty float ball that may be stuck or might need adjustment. The ballcock might also need inspecting and replacing if defective.
